The Ultimate Pressure Washing Selection Guide

When shopping around for a pressure washer there are so many choices on the market these days. But how do you know which model, make or brand is right for your needs. . Based off the most common questions we answer from our customers, this easy-to-use Pressure Washer Selection Guide will help you choose the right machine for you.

Machine Capabilities

When choosing a pressure washer, the first thing you should always consider if the machine's capabilities. Ask yourself what you will be using the machine for in the short and long term. If you choose a machine that is a cold, low psi unit you may need to upgrade in the future if you want to take on chemical or commercial projects. Certain pressure washers will come with disinfectant and water bowser including for a water source but will require larger vehicle mounts/towing capabilities. While others may provide ample high water pressure but need access to a water main and power source. When in doubt speak to a trusted Equipment Specialist for bespoke advice for your needs.

Pressure (psi)

Choosing the right amount of water pressure must always be your first consideration.  The more water pressure you can apply, the easier and quicker you can work. However, too much pressure could cause damage - removing paint, grout, etc. Use this guide when considering water pressure.

  • 1000-2000 psi -   Perfect for home use (driveways, car washing...)

  • 2000-3000 psi - Ideal for prolonged commercial use  (cleaners, plumbers)

  • +3000 psi - Industrial pressure washing powerhouses - These units can remove oil & grease stains, strip paint and even blast dried concrete.

Power Sources - Petrol, Diesel or Electric?

Electric - Cheaper at the cost of mobility.

Choosing an electric power source means you will have no fumes and low running costs, but you will always be restricted by movement. The washer will need access to power and can't be used on medium/large work sites so you always need to be close to a power source.

Petrol - Guarantees a steady strong flow

Easy to move as it carries its own power source but this makes it heavier (particularly if its a smaller unit). Cheaper than diesel while still delivering high pressure, they still require ongoing servicing to maintain optimal performance.

Diesel - The powerful & long-lasting between servicing, but more expensive.

Diesel options are often considered the top model you can buy due to their powerful, heavy-duty capabilities and highly portable with their own power source. This higher quality of machine can make an impact on your wallet with higher upfront purchasing costs but will last you a lifetime (if booked in for regular servicing).

Water Source

All pressure washers require constant steady access to a water source however, you should consider if you will always have access at your worksite. Smaller portable units such as the Jetwave Hornet G2 will deliver excellent pressure and is easy to transport but will require access to a water source. Certain pressure washers such as the Brendon Power washer Bowser Trailers utilise large tanks of water stored in the trailer. Allowing the operator a constant supply of water regardless of their location.

Hot Or Cold

Cold works for practically everything but in some circumstances when you need to remove grease or oil we always recommend a hot model which can easily clean through projects. Cold units can be cheaper than their Hot counterparts but will limit your work capabilities. When it doubt, always choose hot.

Mobility - Size Matters

Mobility is key when using a pressure washer. If you're refined to one space or need to work on remote sites, you need to ensure your machine is up to the challenge.

While larger, pressure washers such as the Brendon Bowser Trailer range provide versatile mobility as they can be towed behind a truck or ute. They can even be fitted to your vehicle as a skid unit transforming your vehicle into the ultimate cleaning powerhouse.   For smaller confined spaces, such as internal cleaning you may need to move between rooms quickly and need a unit that can move with you. A Jetwave trolley unit is compact but powerful enough to move around the worksite by hand.

Accessories & Add Ons

Once you have selected a machine, it's time to see what accessories can be utilized such as...

  • Nozzles & Lances

  • Surfacing Cleaners

  • Odour Suppression Canons

  • Foamers

  • Disinfectant Capabilities

  • Industrial Hose Reels
